The Department of Chemistry offers the Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Chemistry, a B.S in Chemistry with a Concentration in Forensics and a Minor in Chemistry. The B.S. in Chemistry prepares the student for immediate employment or for graduate work in chemistry.  Students are provided the opportunity to understand the fundamental principles of the various branches of chemistry, their applications and the relationship of chemistry to other fields. Graduates are prepared to work effectively as laboratory chemists or in other science and engineering related fields. Whether in chemistry, the biological, geological and physical sciences, or other professions such as medical, pharmaceutical, forensics and engineering, the B.S. in Chemistry will prepare for the future. The pathway to a degree in chemistry with a forensic concentration is challenging due to the extensive math, physics and forensic-related coursework that is required. The program is offered in the Department of Chemistry in conjunction with the Criminal Justice Department.  Course offerings in the department are designated CHEM, PHSC, GEOL, and SCIE.

Minor Degree Program

Courses provided by The Department of Chemistry are of interest to students from a variety of scientific disciplines, including but not limited to, biology, animal science, ornamental horticulture, plant science, food and nutrition, math and pre-veterinarian programs.    The minor in Chemistry degree program offers a structured approach for students to enhance their knowledge and chemical science skills.  This option gives students, whose interests range beyond the traditional major, the benefit of transcript-documented education and training needed to be competitive in the globally diverse STEM workforce.  The minor is highly attractive to students majoring in areas outside of the sciences who intend to apply to medical, pharmacy, and dental schools.   A minor program must include 15 credit hours, with at least 10 of the hours being upper division level - junior/senior level coursework.

Dual Degree Program

The Department of Chemistry offers a number of Dual-Degree Programs in Chemistry-Geology, and, Chemistry-Health Physics, Chemistry-Petroleum Engineering and Chemistry- Chemical Engineering. . These programs are offered in collaboration with the University of Texas, Austin (UTA); Pennsylvania State University (PSU), the University of Arkansas (UARK), Georgia Tech (GT) and University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), respectively. These dual-degree programs consist of three years of course work at FVSU followed by two years of study at the partnered university. Upon completion of the dual degree program students will receive a B.S. degree in Chemistry from FVSU and a second B.S. degree in Geology from UTA or PSU or UARK; or a second BS degree in Health Physics from UNLV; or a second BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from the UTA or PSU; or a second BS degree in Chemical Engineering from GT or UNLV or UARK.

The Department houses the faculty that teaches the physical and earth science content for the students majoring in Middle Grades Education with Science concentration and prepares the students to take the GACE exam and for professional careers in science education.
