Media Studies, Digital Journalism, B.A.

The Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies is granted upon completion of a minimum of 125 semester credit hours to include a minimum of nine (9) semester hours of a foreign language and a computer language. Majors may enroll in a six-hour sequence of a foreign language and take CSCI 1301  Introduction to Data Processing and Computer Science.

Admissions to the Media Studies Major

Students admitted to the major program in Media Studies must meet the following criteria:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better, with no grade below “C” in any course, including core courses.
  • Complete at least 50 semester hours of core courses

The required foreign language proficiency may be determined by an examination administered by the department, by a CLEP test, or by certification of equivalent experiences. Such equivalent experiences include credit for study tours in a country where the spoken language is required, selected work experience involving the use of the foreign language and intensive language summer institutes. Additional course requirements for the major include: (1) three (3) semester hours in a 2000 level literature course (ENGL 2111  and ENGL 2112 ), (2) six (6) semester hours in Introduction to World History (HIST 1111  and HIST 1112 ), and (3) three (3) semester hours in the Survey of Mass Communication (MCMM 2103 ).

Typing proficiency (department test) and language proficiency (department test or MCMM 2103 ) is required for entry into MCMM 2143  and MCMM 2163 . Speech proficiency (departmental test or at least a grade of “C” in MCMM 1123 ), completion of MCMM 1101 , MCMM 2103 , MCMM 2143 , MCMM 2163 , and MCMM 2181K and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.50 are required for Media Studies candidacy and entry into 3000 level or above Mass Communications courses (except MCMM 2123 , MCMM 4303  or MCMM 4323 ). The major area exam is a part of the Capstone Course, MCMM 4361 .

Active membership in the Mass Communications Club is recommended during the student’s period of enrollment as a Mass Communications major. Students selecting the Digital Journalism are also advised to actively participate as members of the Peachite staff or as members of an approved equivalent project or production within the program. Active participation in approved media production activities is recommended for majors in the Public Relations and Audio/Video options.
