The Fort Valley State University Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences advances innovative and high-quality teaching and research to expand our students understanding of behavioral, social, cultural, and environmental aspects of the human condition. We offer programs for students interested in careers in politics, government, law, law enforcement, education, psychology, social work, mental health services, or social services and other careers of consequence to society.

The department currently offers four bachelor’s degree programs and one master’s degree program: (History is deleted as a program offering).

  • The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Criminal Justice (available face-to-face and fully online)
  • The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Political Science (available face-to-face and fully online)
  • The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology (available face-to-face and fully online)
  • The Bachelor of Social Work (B.S.W.)

Minors are also available in 

  • Criminal Justice
  • Geography
  • Gerontology
  • History
  • Political Science
  • Psychology
  • Social Work

The department has hundreds of students pursuing degrees and full-time faculty members with a combination of career field experience and academic research. Faculty members have authored books, published numerous scholarly articles and book reviews, and contributed to major reference works. They have served as consultants, presented papers at national conferences, and served on the editorial boards of academic journals.

The Behavioral & Social Sciences Department learning community is strengthened by its large number of students majoring in our programs.  At the same time, providing a personalized approach which allows us to provide individualized attention and support to students.

The department also offers its students the opportunity to participate in several Student Clubs and Organizations which help them develop real-world experience and leadership skills.  These groups include:

  • Psychology Club
  • Social Work Club
