Psychology, B.A.

The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in psychology is designed to provide students with a foundation in the field of psychology. Students will gain an understanding of the complexity and diversity of human behavior and the psychological theories and concepts which help explain human behavior. Consequently, students who have successfully completed the degree may be able to apply psychological principles to become a more effective in a variety of career-related fields in psychology and human services. In addition, some students may be able to pursue a variety of career and graduate opportunities within psychology, counseling and related fields (e.g. social work).

Students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in psychology will need to pursue a graduate degree before they are eligible to pursue professional licensure. Students are encouraged to check entrance requirements for any graduate program prior to finishing their BA to ensure all prerequisites for their programs of interest have been completed.

This program is available face-to-face or fully online. The requirements are the same for both academic tracks.

Assessment of the Psychology Major

In addition to other specified requirements for graduation, students must participate in all assessment activities for the major program which include but may not be limited to: 1) course embedded assessments, 2) external or standardized tests, 3) the Sophomore/Junior Diagnostic Project, 4) the Senior Integrated Assessment, and 5) a grade of at least a “C” in all required and elective major courses.

General Education Requirements – Core Impacts


Institutional Priority (Institution): 4-5 Credit Hours *Required


Students will demonstrate the ability to think critically and solve problems related to academic priorities at their institution. 

Mathematics and Quantitative Skills (Mathematics): 9 Credit Hours


Students will apply mathematical and computational knowledge to interpret, evaluate, and communicate quantitative information using verbal, numerical, graphical, or symbolic forms. 

Political Science & U.S. History (Citizenship)


Students will demonstrate knowledge of the history of the United States, the history of Georgia, and the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution and the Constitution of Georgia.

Citizenship consists of 18 hours of core-level courses in the major and related areas. It is different for each major. The Citizenship requirements are included in the Program of Study for each degree program. The total semester hour requirement for the Core Curriculum is 60.

 

Arts, Humanities & Ethics (Humanities): 6 Credit hours *Required


Students will effectively analyze and interpret the meaning, cultural significance, and ethical implications of literary/philosophical texts or of works in the visual/performing arts.

Communicating in Writing (Writing): 6 Credit Hours


Students will communicate effectively in writing, demonstrating clear organization and structure, using appropriate grammar and writing conventions. Students will appropriately acknowledge the use of materials from original sources.

Technology, Mathematics, & Sciences (STEM)


Students will use the scientific method and laboratory procedures or mathematical and computational methods to analyze data, solve problems, and explain natural phenomena.
