SOWK 5305 - Behavioral Health and Psychopathology: Practice, Policy, and Research


Credit Hours: 3
This course examines behavioral health problems characterized by a state of mental or emotional challenges, diagnosed pathological disorders, and psychological distress that impact the well-being of people. The course will also explore how emotions, behaviors and biological factor could interrelated components that could encompass the wellbeing of people as well as the ability of affected person to function well. It addresses diversity issues, the impact of managed care, influence of poverty and welfare reform, and ethical concerns in assessing and treating psychopathologies. It then focuses on the most common psychopathologies of adulthood:  schizophrenia; mood disorders; anxiety, adjustment, and dissociative disorders; substance-related disorders; personality disorders with special attention to borderline, narcissistic, and antisocial personality disorders; and health conditions impacting mental health.
